OVERVIEW
Runeterra is the fictional world where the lore of League of Legends takes place. To help establish the foundation of what Runeterra is, we created an interactive map experience that reveals the breadth of the fictional world and offers players a unique experience to uncover the deep lore of League of Legends and the Champions that inhabit it.

MORE CONTEXT
Riot Games did not have a current and definitive player-facing map of the world of Runeterra. None of our stories, comics, events, regions, champions, etc. had any clear spatial context within the world. As a result, many players’ connections to Runeterra were fractured and inconsistent. Players were creating their own maps to fill in what they wanted to know, oftentimes referring to inaccurate sources to base their theories from.
To help solve this we wanted to create a unique experience for our players to explore the fictional world of Runeterra and deep dive into its rich established lore.
Players can interact and explore the map via scrolling or clicking on various nodes and landmarks that connect to the various factions/regions of Runeterra. Once clicked, these nodes reveal relevant content to that area via a pop-out ‘content panel’ giving extra context to the user and more options to discover various world-building features.
